BES/MDS Settings that may periodically disconnect your client

Problem

When running an application on the BlackBerry device that uses BlackBerry Mobile Data System (MDS), the following error message may be displayed:

You have reached the maximum amount of data which can be transferred by the BlackBerry device over a single connection. Contact your system administrator to increase this limit.

Another symptom of this condition is that the client may appear to periodically disconnect and reconnect every few minutes, whether or not you can see the error message above.

Resolution:

This problem has been fixed by RIM in BES version 4.1.6 or higher. For earlier versions, see below:

To configure this setting, the system administrator should perform the following steps on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server:

For BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.0

1. Open BlackBerry Manager.
2. Right click on the server name and click on Mobile Data Service Properties.
3. In the General tab, under Flow Control, increase the Max KB/Connection value.

Note: The maximum KB/Connection value is 1024. This is a limitation of the MDS Web UI - it is possible to set an even higher number by directly updating the SQL Server entry for this field. This should only be attempted by admins comfortable with database updates.

For BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1

1. Open BlackBerry Manager.
2. Highlight the server name and click on the Connection Service tab.
3. Click the Edit properties option.
4. In the General property, under Flow Control, increase the Maximum KB/Connection value.

Note: The maximum KB/Connection value is 1024. This is a limitation of the MDS Web UI - it is possible to set an even higher number by directly updating the SQL Server entry for this field. This should only be attempted by admins comfortable with database updates.

Update: This problem is fixed entirely in BES/MDS version 4.1.6. This version does away with any limits of data transfer on any one TCP connection.

BES 5.0

In BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 5.0, the default value is 1024 KB and the maximum value is 10,240 KB. For more information on changing this setting, refer to the appropriate BlackBerry Enterprise Server Administration Guide.
